Michael, Franklin and Trevor
Grand Theft Auto V was the first game in the main series to build its story around three playable protagonists. Each one comes from a different corner of crime, lives in a different part of San Andreas and wants something different from life. Michael wants to escape his past, Franklin wants to escape his neighborhood, and Trevor mostly wants to settle a score. Put them together and you get the most chaotic partnership in the series.
- Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber living under a new name, voiced by Ned Luke
- Franklin Clinton, a young street hustler looking for a way up, voiced by Shawn Fonteno
- Trevor Philips, an unpredictable drug dealer and gunrunner, voiced by Steven Ogg
- Each has his own special ability, home, wardrobe, vehicles and side missions
Michael De Santa: The Retired Professional
Michael is the veteran of the group. In 2004, a robbery in North Yankton went wrong, and Michael faked his death to get out of the life. He now lives in a mansion in Rockford Hills with his wife Amanda and their children Jimmy and Tracey, under an arrangement with a federal agent that keeps him out of prison. On paper, he has everything he ever wanted. In practice, he is bored, unhappy and drifting through therapy sessions while his family barely tolerates him.
That restlessness drives the story. Michael is the planner and the professional, the one who knows how a job should be done. He loves old films and still sees himself as the hero of a heist movie, which gets him into trouble as soon as an opportunity appears.
In gameplay terms, Michael starts with a strong shooting skill. His special ability slows down time during gunfights, giving you a moment to line up shots and pick enemies off one by one.
Franklin Clinton: The Ambitious Newcomer
Franklin is the youngest of the three and the player’s way into the story. He grew up in South Los Santos and works as a repo man for a shady car dealer, taking back vehicles from customers who missed payments. His best friend Lamar keeps dragging him into gang business, and his dog Chop is the most loyal companion he has.
Franklin wants more than street-level crime, and meeting Michael gives him that chance. Their relationship becomes something like a mentorship, with Michael teaching Franklin the craft while Franklin reminds Michael why he loved it in the first place.
Franklin starts with the best driving skill, and his special ability slows down time behind the wheel. That makes high-speed chases, tight corners and narrow escapes far easier to control.
Trevor Philips: The Wild Card
Trevor is Michael’s former partner, and for nine years he believed Michael died in that 2004 robbery. He now lives in a trailer in Sandy Shores, running a small criminal operation he calls Trevor Philips Enterprises and fighting with every rival in Blaine County. He is violent, impulsive and often terrifying, but also loyal in his own strange way and surprisingly funny.
When Trevor learns that Michael is alive, the story shifts gear. The tension between the old partners, one who ran and one who was left behind, gives the game its emotional core.
Trevor starts with the highest flying skill, which makes him the natural choice for aircraft. His special ability is a rage mode in which he deals double damage and takes far less, turning him into a one-man army for a short time.
How the Three Compare
| Character | Home base | Strongest starting skill | Special ability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michael | Rockford Hills | Shooting | Bullet time in gunfights |
| Franklin | South Los Santos, later Vinewood Hills | Driving | Slow motion while driving |
| Trevor | Sandy Shores | Flying | Rage: double damage, reduced damage taken |
Why Three Protagonists Work
Earlier GTA games followed one character from start to finish. Splitting the story three ways lets Grand Theft Auto V show crime from several angles at once: the family man trying to stay retired, the young man trying to break in, and the outlaw who never left. It also gives the game a natural rhythm. When one storyline gets heavy, switching to another changes the mood completely.
The three leads also share many missions, especially the heists. In those moments, the game often switches between them automatically, so you might start a job as Michael, take over as Franklin for the getaway and finish as Trevor flying the helicopter. How that system works, and when you can use it at will, is covered in Character Switching and Special Abilities.
Supporting Characters You Will Meet
The planner behind the heists and a genius at finding opportunities.
Franklin’s best friend, loud and loyal and always in trouble.
Michael’s family, each with their own plans for his money.
Franklin’s dog, who can join him on walks and even help in a mission.
Which Character Should You Play the Most?
There is no wrong answer, and the game encourages you to use all three. Many players lean on Franklin for driving jobs, Michael for shootouts and Trevor whenever there is an aircraft nearby. Side content is also split between them, so spending time with each one opens up activities and Strangers and Freaks missions you would otherwise miss.
Tip: Skills improve with use, so switching regularly keeps all three characters strong. A Michael who never drives and a Trevor who never shoots will struggle when a mission forces them to.
