Which Ending to Choose

The last act of Grand Theft Auto V hands you a decision. Once the final big score is done, Franklin is cornered by men who each want one of his partners eliminated, and you pick his response. The three outcomes are more than alternate cutscenes: two of them delete a protagonist from your save for good. Below is what each option does to your game, with story spoilers kept to a minimum.

Your three options

  • Option A, “Something Sensible”: Trevor leaves the game for good
  • Option B, “The Time’s Come”: Michael leaves the game for good
  • Option C, “The Third Way”: none of the leads dies
  • Most fans regard C as the official version of events

How You Get to the Choice

Near the finale, two powerful men lean on Franklin from opposite sides. One wants Trevor taken out, the other wants Michael, and both make it plain that saying no will not be tolerated. Then the game puts three options in front of you, and whatever you pick is locked into that save.

Note: your pick decides who you can control after the credits. Keep a backup save made right before the decision, and you can see the other outcomes without playing the campaign again.

Something Sensible (Option A)

Here Franklin turns on Trevor, siding with the people squeezing him and treating his unstable partner as a problem to remove. From then on Trevor cannot be played, so his side missions, hobbies and Sandy Shores hideout drop out of your game.

Some players pick it deliberately because Trevor’s chaos wore them out. Plenty of others see it as the grimmest finish of the three, because loyalty to his friends is the one trait Trevor never loses.

The Time’s Come (Option B)

This time Franklin’s target is Michael. The option leans on friction that grows between the two across the campaign. After it, Michael is written out for good, and with him go the De Santa family thread, the Rockford Hills mansion and his personal activities.

Many fans call it the saddest ending. Michael pulled Franklin out of small-time hustling and taught him the trade, so turning on him recasts everything that came before.

The Third Way (Option C)

In the third option Franklin rejects both ultimatums and backs his partners. Rather than sacrificing one of them, the trio teams up for a final strike against all of their enemies at once. Pull it off and Michael, Franklin and Trevor all remain under your control, so switching characters for leftover side content still works after the credits roll.

Most of the community treats C as canon, and it is the safe pick if you want to keep the full cast. Many players also find it the most rewarding finish, since it pays off the teamwork the plot spends so long building.

Side by Side

Option Franklin decides to Playable afterward Tone
A: Something Sensible Kill Trevor Franklin, Michael Cold, calculated
B: The Time’s Come Kill Michael Franklin, Trevor Personal, painful
C: The Third Way Protect both Everyone Defiant, triumphant

The Case Against Options A and B

Forum threads about the finale keep returning to one complaint: the first two options feel like punishment. Removing a lead also removes a slice of post-story content, and some players say the decision would carry more weight if each path unlocked something unique instead of just subtracting. Others like that the game dares to make the outcome stick.

Picking Your Ending

Go with C if you

  • Want to keep the whole trio
  • Are aiming for 100% completion
  • Prefer the version most fans accept
  • Like a finale with a real payoff
A or B make sense if you

  • Are replaying on a spare save to see everything
  • Want the bleaker outcomes
  • Strongly dislike one of the partners

For a first playthrough, C is the easy call: it leaves the world fully open, lines up with what most fans accept as canon and gives the story the closure it earns. To see the others, branch off from your backup save, watch them on that file, then go back to the save where everyone lived.

Tip: reaching 100% means finishing the campaign with any of the three endings, yet having all three leads available makes clearing the remaining tasks far smoother. The complete list is in Gold Medals and 100% Completion.
