Escaping the Wanted Level
Every GTA player knows the feeling: a crime goes slightly wrong, a star appears, then two, then sirens everywhere. Grand Theft Auto V’s police are smarter than in earlier games. They search for you based on what they can see, and losing them is about breaking line of sight rather than simply driving fast. Once you understand how they look for you, escaping becomes much easier.
- The wanted level goes from one to five stars
- Police must see you to keep chasing; breaking line of sight starts the escape
- Flashing stars mean police have lost you and are searching
- Higher stars bring helicopters, SWAT and heavier responses
Reading the Minimap
The minimap tells you everything about the chase. While police can see you, it flashes red and blue and your stars stay solid. When they lose sight of you, the stars start flashing, which means they are searching but no longer know your exact position. Police units on the minimap show cones of vision; staying out of those cones is the key to escaping.
Tip: Watch the searched area shown on the minimap. Getting out of that zone while the stars are flashing is the fastest way to lose your wanted level completely.
What Each Wanted Level Brings
| Stars | Response |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Patrol cars and officers on foot; easy to lose in alleys and side streets |
| 3 | More units and a police helicopter that can track you from above |
| 4 | SWAT teams and additional helicopters join the chase |
| 5 | The heaviest response, with constant pressure on the ground and in the air |
Shooting down a helicopter at three stars can push you up to four, so think twice before firing at it.
Best Places to Hide
Break line of sight quickly at one or two stars.
Block helicopter view at three stars and up. Listen for trains.
Police often won’t follow you inside.
Patrol cars struggle off-road, especially in Blaine County.
On foot, they hide you unless officers get very close.
Diving underwater can break visual contact.
Switching Vehicles
Police are looking for the car they last saw you in. Taking a new vehicle while you are unseen can significantly help your escape. Switching cars in full view of officers, on the other hand, does nothing except slow you down.
Using Los Santos Customs
Los Santos Customs can clear your wanted level, but only if police did not see you drive in. Once inside, choose any modification, such as a new paint job, and the wanted level disappears when you leave. If officers watched you enter, the shop will not help you.
Note: A respray only works when the stars are flashing. Lose visual contact first, then head to the shop.
Dealing With Helicopters
From three stars up, helicopters become your biggest problem. Cover that works against ground units, like crouching behind a wall, does nothing against something watching from above. Use tunnels or overpasses to block their view. If you have to fight, deal with ground units first and then target the pilot. Fast aircraft flown high or out over the ocean can also escape a helicopter, especially if you have Trevor’s flying skill.
Step-by-Step Escape Plan
- Break line of sight Turn into an alley, a tunnel or behind buildings.
- Wait for flashing stars That means police are searching rather than chasing.
- Leave the search area Move away from the zone on the minimap while avoiding vision cones.
- Swap or respray Change vehicles unseen or slip into Los Santos Customs.
- Stay hidden Don’t step back into view until the stars disappear.
Character Tricks
Each protagonist has something that helps in a chase. Franklin’s slow-motion driving makes tight escapes much easier. Trevor’s rage helps him survive a firefight when things go badly. Michael’s bullet time lets him take out pursuers precisely. Choosing the right character for a job you know will get messy can save a lot of trouble.
If you would rather skip the chase entirely, the LAWYERUP cheat lowers your wanted level; see Cheat Codes for Every Platform for the full list.
The best way to learn these tricks is to practice them. Start GTA V in your browser, earn a star or two and see how quickly you can disappear.
