GTA Vice City
You arrive at the docks in a loud Hawaiian shirt, the drug deal goes wrong within minutes, and Tommy Vercetti is left with no money, no product and an angry boss back in Liberty City. GTA Vice City starts with that ambush and turns it into a rise to power across a neon city in 1986. Every mission brings Tommy closer to the people who set him up and closer to owning the city that tried to bury him.

Tommy Vercetti and the Ambush
Tommy has just spent fifteen years in prison, and his boss Sonny Forelli sends him to Vice City to oversee a deal. When it falls apart in an ambush, Tommy needs to find the money and the people responsible. His first ally is the twitchy lawyer Ken Rosenberg, and soon he meets Lance Vance, whose brother died in the same ambush.
Unlike the silent hero of the previous game, Tommy talks, argues and makes jokes. That personality changes the whole feel.
The cast around him is loud and memorable. Ricardo Diaz, the paranoid drug lord, Avery Carrington, the property tycoon, Kent Paul, the fast-talking hanger-on, and Phil Cassidy, the one-armed arms dealer, all give missions a distinct flavor. Players who come for characters and humor often say this game has the most quotable cast in the classic era.
Buying Up Vice City Property by Property
Ownership is the heart of GTA Vice City. The Ocean View Hotel is Tommy’s first safehouse, and properties you buy add more save points and garages around the map. Businesses go further, each with its own mission chain that, once finished, starts generating steady income you collect from the property.
- Sunshine Autos: collect lists of cars to steal for the showroom
- Kaufman Cabs: taxi company missions with a rival cab firm
- Malibu Club: the nightclub that leads to a major bank heist
- Print Works: counterfeiting operation with steady income
- Interglobal Films: a film studio with its own odd storyline
Some businesses are required to finish the main story, so they are not optional decorations. A good habit is buying a safehouse early on the island where you spend most of your time, because a nearby save point cuts down on long drives after every mission.
Motorbikes, Boats and Neon Streets
Vice City introduced motorbikes to the 3D series, and they quickly became fan favorites for their speed and handling. The PCJ-600 is the classic choice for weaving through traffic, while heavier bikes handle better on long straights along Ocean Drive.
The coastline invites boat chases, and the waterways give you shortcuts that cars cannot take.
Driving through the city at night is part of the appeal. Neon signs reflect on wet streets, and the radio sets the mood perfectly. Explorers who like soaking up atmosphere will spend time just cruising between missions, especially along the beaches and through Little Havana.
The Soundtrack That Defines the Era
The radio is one of the most beloved parts of the game. Flash FM plays 1980s pop, V-Rock blasts hard rock, Wave 103 covers new wave, Emotion 98.3 serves up power ballads and Fever 105 brings soul and disco. Talk stations like VCPR and KCHAT fill the gaps with satirical hosts and callers.
Many players still connect certain songs to specific missions. Hearing a familiar track on the right station can bring back exact memories of a chase or a shootout.
Music fans often choose cars based on the station that happens to be playing, and switching stations mid-chase to find the right song is practically a tradition. The soundtrack is a big part of why the game’s atmosphere is still rated so highly.
Hard Missions and Honest Flaws
A few missions in this game have a reputation for frustration. Demolition Man, where you fly a remote-control helicopter carrying bombs to a construction site, is the most infamous. The controls are twitchy, the time limit is tight and many players remember spending far longer on it than any other task.
Players often ask how to beat it. The common advice is to pick up one bomb at a time and fly low, placing each one carefully rather than rushing.
Other common complaints include weak enemy AI and occasional performance hiccups. Neither stopped the game from being remembered fondly. When players ask where to start buying property, the answer is usually the Malibu Club or Sunshine Autos, since both lead into useful missions and income. And if you wonder whether you can lose the police quickly, the Pay ‘n’ Spray works just as it did in earlier games, wiping your wanted level with a fresh coat of paint.
GTA Vice City is all about the climb: survive the ambush with Ken Rosenberg at your side, buy the Malibu Club and Sunshine Autos, and by the final showdown at the Vercetti Estate, Tommy will own half the neon skyline of Vice City.
