Owners of older copies of Grand Theft Auto V waited a long time for this one. Since June 2026, a PlayStation 4 copy or a digital Xbox One copy can be carried over to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S edition, and on PC the Legacy release can be swapped for Enhanced. Here is who is eligible, what improves after the switch and how your save files make the trip.
- Live since June 18, 2026
- PS4 copies move to PS5, digital Xbox One copies move to Xbox Series X|S
- On PC, Legacy moves to Enhanced
- Your campaign progress comes along

Note: the Xbox side of the announcement names digital Xbox One copies. Disc owners should look up Rockstar’s official notes to see what applies to them.
Why It Is a Big Deal
Back in March 2022, when the PS5 and Xbox Series editions first appeared, moving up from older hardware worked on different terms, and once an early offer ended, anyone who wanted the newer edition had to buy it as a separate product. The 2026 path stays open, so everyone with a PS4 or digital Xbox One copy can enjoy the strongest console version on the hardware they have today.
The calendar explains the timing. With Grand Theft Auto VI set for November 19, 2026, the change gives a huge player base one more reason to tour Los Santos on modern consoles before the series moves on to Leonida.
Improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
- Up to 4K output, plus ray tracing in the Fidelity and Performance RT modes
- HDR support and frame rates as high as 60 fps
- Shorter load times
- Sharper textures, longer view distances, thicker foliage and richer lighting
- Busier, more diverse streets and sidewalks
- PS5 only: DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and 3D audio
Improvements on PC Enhanced
- Ray tracing for shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination
- Upscaling with DLSS 3 and FSR 3
- DirectStorage for quicker loads
- Adaptive triggers on a DualSense pad and Dolby Atmos sound
Bringing Your Save Along
Campaign progress from PS4 and Xbox One is accepted by the newer editions. When the PS5 and Xbox Series versions arrived in 2022, the transfer ran through Rockstar Games Social Club: on the old console you sent a save to the cloud from the Game tab of the pause menu, then pulled it down on the new one. Only a single save per platform was stored, and only for a limited period, so do the transfer soon after you decide to switch.
- Connect accounts Check that your PlayStation or Xbox profile is tied to Rockstar Games Social Club.
- Send the save In the older edition, open the pause menu and choose the upload option.
- Get the new edition Claim the PS5 or Xbox Series version in your console’s store.
- Restore the save Start the newer edition, download the file and carry on from the same spot.
Tip: reach a moment in the story you are satisfied with and make a fresh save right before uploading. The cloud keeps just one file per platform, so send your strongest one.
And GTA Online?
The change landed close to a new GTA Online update, The Kortz Center Heist, which went live in July 2026. On PS5, Xbox Series and PC Enhanced, GTA Online adds features such as Hao’s Special Works car upgrades and the Career Builder for newcomers, and GTA Online characters can be migrated too.
Story Mode Through GTA+
Rockstar also pointed out that the Grand Theft Auto V campaign sits in the GTA+ Games Library, so subscribers have one more route into the current-generation story mode.
Is the Switch Worth Doing?
With a PS4 or digital Xbox One copy and a newer console under your TV, there is hardly an argument against it: the game looks sharper, runs smoother, loads quicker and your progress stays intact. On PC, pick Enhanced for a modern rig and keep Legacy for older machines. The full story of every edition is in Release History and Platforms, and while the new version downloads you can play GTA V here.
