Release History and Platforms
Few games stay relevant long enough to appear on three generations of consoles and in two separate PC editions, but Grand Theft Auto V has. The story began in 2013, picked up big improvements in 2014 and 2015, came back for the newest consoles in 2022 and gained a fresh PC edition in 2025. Every release brought something new, and knowing the differences helps when you pick a platform. Below, each edition is covered in the order it appeared.
- PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360: September 17, 2013
- PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: November 18, 2014
- PC: April 14, 2015
- PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S: March 15, 2022
- PC Enhanced: March 4, 2025
2013: Where It All Started
On September 17, 2013, Grand Theft Auto V reached PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It squeezed everything those machines had to offer into a massive open world, three playable leads and a launch that smashed sales records within days. GTA Online came out on October 1, 2013, as its own mode sharing the same map.
Hardly anyone plays this first edition today, yet it laid down the foundation every later release built on: the world, the plot, the heists and the satirical humor.
2014: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
The next edition came out on November 18, 2014, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it went far beyond a sharper image.
- A higher resolution and the ability to see much farther
- Heavier traffic, extra animals and all-new plant life
- Better weather and more convincing damage
- Over 100 extra tracks spread across the radio stations, along with new DJ mixes
- A first-person camera that the previous consoles never had
- Extras for returning players, such as rare vehicles and new shooting range challenges
The star addition was first-person play. You could go through the entire game, behind the wheel and in every gunfight, seeing the world through the characters’ eyes.
2015: Arrival on PC
The PC edition followed on April 14, 2015, and for many players it soon became the version to beat. It handled 4K and higher resolutions, frame rates of 60 fps and above, and setups with several monitors. It also debuted the Rockstar Editor, a toolkit for capturing, cutting and publishing gameplay videos, together with Director Mode, where you can build your own scenes using characters, passers-by and animals.
2022: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
March 15, 2022, brought editions for the newest consoles. PS5 and Xbox Series X owners got three graphics presets to choose from.
| Preset | Frame rate | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | 30 fps | Native 4K plus ray tracing (PS5 and Series X) |
| Performance | 60 fps | 4K through upscaling (PS5 and Series X) |
| Performance RT | 60 fps | Upscaled 4K plus ray tracing (PS5 and Series X) |
Whichever preset you choose, you get quicker loading, more diverse cars and people on the streets, lusher plant life, nicer lighting and punchier explosions. On PS5 there are also DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and 3D audio, while Xbox Series X|S offers spatial sound. The Series S runs Fidelity and Performance at reduced resolutions.
2025: PC Enhanced
On March 4, 2025, PC players received the current-gen treatment as a standalone release called Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. It added ray-traced shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination, DLSS 3 and FSR 3 upscaling, DirectStorage for shorter loads, DualSense support and Dolby Atmos sound. The previous release lives on as Grand Theft Auto V Legacy for PCs with older parts.
Good to know: on PC, Legacy and Enhanced are two distinct releases, and GTA Online players on one cannot join sessions on the other.
2026: Upgrades for Older Copies
Since June 18, 2026, PlayStation 4 copies and digital Xbox One copies can be moved up to the current-gen editions, and campaign progress comes with them. PC players can switch from Legacy to Enhanced in the same way. Every step is explained in Current-Gen Upgrade Explained.
Language Options
All editions are voiced in English. Menus and subtitles come in 13 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Picking an Edition
On a current console, the PS5 or Xbox Series edition is the strongest option. On PC, choose Enhanced for up-to-date hardware and Legacy for older setups. Whichever you go with, you get the same story, the same map and the same heists. And if you just want to jump in right away, you can play it in your browser on our home page.
